Determination of Pruritus (Itching) Levels in Hemodialysis Patients

Journal Title: MAS Journal of Applied Sciences - Year 2023, Vol 8, Issue 4

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the pruritus (itch) levels of patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) treatment. The sample of the study consisted of 158 HD patients hospitalized in the nephrology clinics of a hospital between May 2021 and May 2022. “Structured Questionnaire” and “5-D Itch Scale” were used to collect data. Number and percentage calculations, arithmetic mean, Independent Samples t test, One-way ANOVA and post hoc multiple comparisons test were used in the analysis of the data. According to the research findings; The mean age of the patients was 65.34±9.32 years, the mean duration of chronic kidney disease (CKD) was 3.29±1.07 years, and the mean duration of HD was 2.50±0.71 years. It was determined that the mean scores of the "duration" (F=3.787; p=0.025) sub-dimension of the "5-D itching scale" were different according to the education level of the patients (p<0.05). Again, the mean scores of the total “5-D itching scale” and its sub-dimensions were found to be statistically different according to income perception levels and the status of applying anti-itch treatments (p<0.05). The patients' total score average of the ”5-D itching scale“ was 15.03±4.78 points, the ”duration“ subscale score average was 3.19 ±0.99 points, the ”degree“ subscale score average was 3.12±0.94 points, the ”direction“ subscale score average was 3.15±1.12 points, the ”disability“ subscale score average was 3.15±0.92 points, the ”distribution" subscale score average was 2.40±1.12 points. As a result of the study, it was determined that HD patients had moderate levels of itching.
