DETERMINATION OF THE ABRASIVE WEAR RATE FOR THE LOW FRICTION COATINGS USING BALL-CRATERING METHOD

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 224, Issue 2

Abstract

In this paper, a micro-scale abrasive wear tests was used to calculate of the abrasive wear rate Kc for the coatings TiN, WC/C and MoS2/Ti. SiC particles, with a mean size diameter of 4 μm, were mixed with distilled water (concentration of 20% v/v). The experimental results indicated the following: – This method is very important from the technological point of view because of low values of standard deviation obtained for the diameters of the craters in the substrate and coatings. – It is possible to measure the abrasive wear rate for the substrate Ks and the abrasive wear rate for the coating Kc for different types coatings using this method. – It is possible to compare the wear coefficient of coating Kc for all analysed coatings using ball-cratering method (same wear test parameters).
