Determination of the parameters of the distributions evaluated with the coefficient of variation

Abstract

Determination of the type and parameters of distributions is often associated with difficulties caused by a small amount of statistical data on failures of technical devices. Incomplete initial information means such a sample of failures, the number of members of which is less than the number of observations required by the rules of applied statistics to verify the agreement of the experimental distribution with the theoretical distribution. The purpose of the article is to present the method of determining the parameters of distributions according to the estimated value of the coefficient of variation in the conditions of incomplete initial information about the operating time for failure of technical devices. The formulas and calculated values of the coefficients of variation of traditional that is used in the theory of reliability distributions (exponential, Weibull, and gamma), as also proposed by the author to describe the failures of technical devices in the conditions of incompleteness of the initial information distributions (cosine, cosine squared, and exponential). Depending on the obtained values of the coefficients of variation, appropriate distributions are chosen to describe the processing, sudden or gradual failures of technical devices. The method of determination of parameters of distributions on the estimated value of coefficient of variation is stated. A numerical example of determining the parameters of distributions for gradual failures of technical devices is given and dependences of the probability of failure-free operation and failure rate on the service time are constructed.
