Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2015, Vol 8, Issue 40
Abstract
The aim of the present study is to determine early childhood teachers’ views on science education and relevant in-service training needs. Relevant data was collected from the sample of the study, 201 early childhood teachers working in Konya city centre, using a web based In-Service Training Needs Assessment Survey. According to the findings, most of the participants consider pre-service science education as insufficient due to the discrepancies in content and its application in early childhood education. Among the problems coming to the fore in early childhood education is the lack of relevant educational materials. Hence, among the solutions suggested, provision of educational materials to teach sciences in early childhood has priority. The ratio of early childhood teachers with an in-service education for teaching science is low. Among the issues proposed by the participants to be included in an in-service teacher education program are; learning and using effective methods and techniques for teaching science.
