Developing Communicative Competence through Teaching Speech Acts

Abstract
In acquiring a foreign language, one needs to assimilate, in addition to the structural rules, a set of sociocultural rules that will guide the language learner in the choice of appropriate forms. If the purpose of a language course in English for Specific Purposes is to allow students to reach a high level of communicative competence; then all the three components: grammatical, discourse and sociolinguistic competences are to be considered. The main aims of this article are to present a framework and suggestions for the teaching of speech acts in an integrative manner, thus enabling ESP students to become aware of the sociolinguistic rules and the cultural differences of the target language as opposed to their native language.
