DEVELOPMENT OF MUCOADHESIVE CHITOSAN-BASED DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM
Journal Title: Progress on Chemistry and Application of Chitin and its Derivatives - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue
Abstract
Chitosan is a highly versatile biopolymer characterised by low toxicity, biocompatibility, and slow but complete biodegradation in the human body, possessing multiple reactive groups. One of the most well-known properties of positively charged chitosan derivatives is their ability to bind mucous membranes. The aim of this work was the analysis of mucoadhesion of unmodified 20 kDa chitosan and its hydrophobic (HC) and hydrophobic quaternised (QHC) derivatives in vitro and ex vivo. Unmodified chitosan formed large aggregates in vitro in keratinocyte and colon cell cultures and ex vivo in murine small intestine and muscle explants. At the same time, HC and especially QHC bound cells in vitro and ex vivo in a fine dotted manner, as evidenced by confocal microscopy. Such a pattern of hydrophobic derivatives distribution provides the possibility to develop mucoadhesive drug delivery systems with increased local drug release and improved chitosan biodegradation.

PRELIMINARY STUDIES ON THE USABLE PROPERTIES OF INNOVATIVE WOUND DRESSINGS
There is endless and growing demand on a novel and innovative wound dressings, which except basic protective performance accelerate the process of wounds healing and/or replace the patient skin function. The studies on t...
FORMATION OF FIBRES AND SPHERES FROM CHITIN SOLUTION
The applications of chitin are limited due to its insolubility in most organic solvents. The chemical modification of chitin to generate new bio-functional materials can bring more desirable properties. A concentration o...
HETEROGENEOUS DEACETYLATION OF CHITIN DEGRADED WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE IN A MICROWAVE FIELD
Two-step procedure of obtaining chitosan with tailored properties has been elaborated. In the first step chitin from the shells of krill (Euphausia superba) and common shrimp (Crangon crangon [L.]) was subjected simultan...
THE EFFECT OF MICROCRYSTALLINE CHITOSAN ON THE ACTIVITY OF PYRUVATE KINASE M2 ISOENZYME INVOLVED IN REGULATING PROLIFERATION OF EHRLICH ASCITES TUMOR (EAT) CELLS IN VITRO
The pyruvate kinase M2 isoenzyme from the nucleoplasm of tumor cells, which catalyzes the reaction of the phosphoryl group transfer from 2-phosphoenolpyruvate (2-PEP) to ADP with the formation of ATP, also demonstrates t...
THE INVESTIGATIONS ON PROCESS TYPE INFLUENCE ON METHYL VIOLET ADSORPTION ON CHITIN AND CHITIN DEACETYLATION PRODUCTS
The aim of this work was to a study various adsorption processes of methyl violet (model compound of aniline dye) on chitin and chitin deacetylation products. Two types of adsorption processes - batch and continuous - we...
