DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIO-GEOGRAPHIC RESEARCH AT THE INSTITUTE OF GEOGRAPHY OF NAS OF UKRAINE

Abstract
The scientific activity of the Department of Socio-geographical research at the Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine from 1964 to date has been covered - formation of the department, research directions, scientific achievements. Research topics: development of the theory of spatial organization of society; structural analysis and typization of production-territorial complexes and resettlement systems; patterns of interaction between nature and society. Specific research - socio-geographical principles of regional development of Ukraine; territorial structure of economy and population, agro-industrial complexes; vital activity of the population; cities as centers of socio-economic activity and poles of growth, the formation of metropolitan regions. With the achievement of Ukraine’s independence, the direction of research has been adjusted in the light of new socio-political and economic realities. An important role of academician M.M. Palamarchuk ‒ the founder of the department ‒ in the development of social geography was shown. The role of social geography in solving modern problems in the conditions of balanced economic, social and ecological development of Ukraine is emphasized.
