Development of sociomoral reflection in the modern cognitive developmental concept: the measure and examples of use in education
Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2015, Vol 49, Issue 7
Abstract
The article discusses the theories of sociomoral reflection development - with special emphasis put on John C. Gibbs' theory - and presents attempts to support this area of development within existing educational programs. Most of the programs are of an intervention nature and are aimed at adolescents with problems with behavior and social functioning. Besides sensitizing and supporting sociomoral reflection, the educational programs designed based on Kohlberg's theory, which was developed by Gibbs, take into consideration the social context, school atmosphere and culture, and group processes, e.g. coping with prejudice. The first version of the KFS-M questionnaire is presented, which serves to assess the level of sociomoral reflection in adolescent students and which was developed based on the Sociomoral Reflection Measure-Short Form SRM-SF (Gibbs, Basinger, Fuller, 1992).
