Abstract

The main stages of formation of the cartographic direction of research since the foundation of the laboratory of complex mapping of the production forces of the Ukrainian SSR, in accordance with the Decree of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in 1964, were considered. Therefore, a new scientific direction - geographical mapping - was launched at the Academy of Sciences. On the basis of the laboratory, a department of cartography was created within the Geography Sector (1991 - the Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). Department used and enriched the main provisions of scientific cartographic concepts (from cognitive to geoinformation), introduced a systematic approach in mapping difficult-organized territorial systems, developed the idea of cartographic modeling, initiated and implemented the topical areas of mapping in cartographic works – nature management, nature conservation, ecological and medical-geographical and other, developed a scientific basis of the formation of geoinformation systems as well as geoinformation mapping theory. The main stages of the formation of the Ukrainian school of atlas cartography are shown. The article also highlights the main directions and achievements in the training of scientific personnel, publication of results of scientific researches and cartographic works, incl. and the National Atlas of Ukraine.
