DEVELOPMENT OF THE LIBRARY IN THE SOUTH OF UKRAINE IN THE 30-40’S. XIX CENTURY: ACTIVITIES OF THE LIBRARY COMMITTEES IN THE RICHELIEU LYCEUM OF ODESSA

Abstract
The article deals with the evolution of librarianship in the South of Ukraine on the example of activities of two library committees in the Odessa Richelieu Lyceum in 1838-1842. The participation of the Richelieu Lyceum teaching staff in the process of ordering of the Lyceum library collection is shown being based on archival documents that are introduced for the first time. The activities of the library committees were quite useful for the development of the Richelieu Lyceum library particularly for recording of the literature, which had been acquired. For the first time an audit to record the book stocks of the main educational institution of the south of Ukraine was carried out and the rules for using the library were compiled with participation of persons who did not belong to the library staff. The main work on drawing up the rules for the Richelieu Lyceum library was done by the acting librarian P. V. Becker who was a part-time Lyceum professor.
