Journal Title: International Journal of Ayurveda & Alternative Medicine - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 5

Abstract

Among Ashtanga Ayurveda Agadatantra is a science which deals with the study of poisons and the treating methods of poisoning. Sushruta defines Agadtantra as treating system of poisoning of venomous animals like sarp (snake), keeta (insect), mushaka (rat) etc. In India 200,000 snake bites and 15-20,000 deaths due to it get recorded per year. Poisonous snake bite is one of a major cause for fatality in India and it requires intensive care for minimizing the death rate. Snakes are divided into two main poisonous and non-poisonous. The diagnosis and treatment of venomous snake bite is sometimes difficult for clinicians. Because sufficient information has not been provided in clinical practice. For administration of ASV it is important to get a proper diagnosis weather the snake is poisonous or nonpoisonous. Again differentiating the bite marks of venomous animal from nonvenomous & other insects is also difficult but yet important task. No definite diagnosis markers or kits are available for clinical practice. Therefore definite diagnosis of snake venom poison requires positive identification of the snakebite for manifestation. This research article going to focus on clinical diagnosis of venomous snake bite regarding ancient and contemporary toxicology.
