Diagnostic imaging of salivary ducts of major salivary glands

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2009, Vol 62, Issue 3

Abstract

Aim of the study: To review current diagnostic techniques used in imaging subtle anatomy and pathology of salivary ducts on the basis of own material and literature.Material and methods: Current diagnostic tools used in imaging salivary duct pathologies include conventional radiography, sialography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance sialography and sialoendoscopy. Conclusions: Digital subtraction sialography (DSS) and ultrasonography are the methods of choice in the imaging of salivary duct pathology. Despite being almost a hundred years old and the availability of other diagnostic tools, sialography remains the best diagnostic method for the imaging of subtle anatomy of salivary gland duct system. Magnetic resonance sialography is a noninvasive alternative method used in the diagnostics of salivary gland calculi and salivary duct stenoses. Thus it can also be carried out in cases of acute sialoadenitis. In the future sialoendoscopy may become one of the main diagnostic procedures for salivary duct disorders.
