Abstract

Introduction: periodic monitoring tests allow to measure the degree of achieved oral health goals recommended by the World Health Organization and included in the National Health Programme. Aim of the study: evaluation of DMFT and SiC indices in 12-year old children residents of Podlaskie region in the light of epidemiological studies conducted in 2003 and 2010. Material and methods: in 2003 in the Podlaskie region total examined children were 188, 101 boys and 87 girls. 98 people lived in the city, 90 respondents came from rural area. In 2010, the study included a total of 257 children 12-year old children: 134 boys and 123 girls, from the area of urban character originated 157 children, and 70 from rural land. Results: between 2003 and 2010 in urban areas caries indices decreased: DMFT of 2.04 and SIC Index of 2.89, while in rural areas above mentioned indices increased: DMFT of 0.13 and SIC Index of 0.49. In children living in rural area we have seen positive changes in the distribution of DMFT components, because during this period in the number of filled teeth due to caries (F) has increased significantly and 2010 was higher than the number of tooth with decay (D). Girls were slightly more detected caries than boys. Conclusions: It will be very difficult to achieve the 11th strategic objectives of National Health Programme for the 12-year old children in the Podlaskie in 2015. Large differences in the severity of dental caries between city and rural area should encourage to develop programs for residents of small towns.
