Influence of the delivery term on the time of permanent teeth eruption in twins
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2009, Vol 62, Issue 4
Abstract
Introduction: Delayed permanent teeth eruption is one of the characteristic features of children born prematurely. Twin pregnancy is a very strong factor predisposing to premature birth.Aim of the study: To determine how term of birth affects the permanent teeth eruption in twins. Material and methods: The sample consisted of 35 twin pairs aged between 6.5 and 7.5 years. Assuming that premature birth is one that occurs before the 37th completed week of gestation, the mean term of twin delivery was calculated. The progress of permanent teeth eruption in twins was assessed taking into account the rate of the eruption process of particular groups of teeth. Results: The obtained results were compared with the accepted time of permanent teeth eruption in 7-year-old children. It was found that permanent teeth eruption process in twins is delayed in relation to generally accepted standards. Hence, the total number of erupted permanent teeth (central incisors, lateral incisors and first molars) in twins was significantly lower than in an average 7-year-oldchild. Since the average term of twin delivery occurs in 35th week of gestation most twins are regarded as born prematurely. This may explain significant delayin permanent teeth eruption. Conclusions: Delayed permanent teeth eruption in twins can be regarded as a characteristic feature and/or consequence of premature birth.
