Diagnostic management in a patient with hyperdontia

Abstract

[b]Hyperdontia, [/b]characterized by the presence of supernumerary tooth germs, is the second most common dental anomaly. The region particularly predisposed to the formation of supernumerary teeth is the anterior maxilla; supernumerary lateral incisors, premolars and fourth molars are less common. The presence of supernumerary teeth may contribute to various abnormalities, therefore, in the majority of case, extraction is recommended. The management, however, should be correlated with the patient developmental age and assessment of the risk of complications. [b]Aim[/b]: to present advantages of 3D visualization in a patient with hyperdontia. [b]Conclusion[/b]: Thanks to CBCT, the distances between supernumerary teeth and normal teeth were determined. The case described confirmed the usefulness of 3D radiological imaging for the diagnosis and orthodontic treatment planning in patients with hyperdontia. (Orthod. Forum 2011; 7: 198 - 203).
