Differential Properties of Discourse Markers

Abstract

The article deals with the analysis of the discourse markers functions and peculiarities of their usage in discourse. Due to different research perspectives, there has always been confusion and disagreement in the terminology to discourse markers. Discourse markers, also having been studied under various labels including discourse operators, discourse connectives, discourse words, are used extensively in both spoken and written language to signal the structure of the discourse. Classifications of discourse markers and their functioning in modern English language can define their main classes: pragmatic markers (basic markers, commentary markers, parallel markers, discourse markers), semantic markers (conditional markers, contrastive markers, temporal markers), and topical markers. Discourse markers are defined as linguistic items, with no syntactic function at the sentence level, which serve, according to their morphosyntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties, as a guide for the interpretation of utterances. The speaker adds these markers to reduce the cognitive effort required from the hearer to interpret the utterance, by signalling which inference reflects more accurately the speaker’s meaning. Discourse markers belong to different parts of speech, although they may be combined into one word class on the basis of their mutual functions connected with communication management and organization. The research of discourse markers proves that multifunctionality is their important property.
