Universal Concepts of Morality in the English Linguoculture

Abstract

In the article the universal concepts ''morality'' and their representation in the English linguoculture have been considered. Based on the definitions of the lexicographic sources, the author separated the main concepts, which form the concept "morality". The moral concepts have been investigated as the universal generally accepted human values. The connection of the language and culture as a result of the formation of the views, traditions and beliefs of the English people has been characterized. In the course of analysis the author separated the elements the concept "morality", such as good, goodness, responsibility, code of conduct, love, patience etc. It has been established that in the English linguoculture, "morality" is associated with such behaviour and traits as compliance to the norms of behaviour and law, love, patience, awareness, dignity and honesty. The associative components of the specified moral qualities included reliability, will, dignity, decency, benevolence. The research shows that if a person has moral-ethical qualities, he or she is respected in the society. The analysis evidences that the concept "morality" is characterized by the social and individual character. Thus, compliance to the rules is the social manifestation of morality, while decency, dignity, honesty are rather individual categories, and such quality as good belongs to both specified categories.
