Digital Video Frame Rate Up-Conversion Based on Modified Block Matching Technique

Abstract

This paper presents a novel digital video frame rate up-conversion technique based on modified block matching algorithm. The primary target is to achieve an observable improvement in the test video playback quality (in terms of frame rate) while overcoming the degrading effects like flickering, occlusion as well as artifact problems to some significant extend. This is obtained by fusing multiple interpolated, motion-compensated frames based on certain pixel reliability weighting scheme and some smoothening functions. The proposed method consists of four stages namely, identification of motion between frames, generation of the motion vector mapping between frames, generation of multiple intermediate interpolated frames and weighted fusion of the interpolated frames.
