DIGNITY OF HUMAN BEING AS A SOURCE OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE LIGHT OF THE TEACHING OF JOHN PAUL II

Journal Title: Studia z Prawa Wyznaniowego - Year 2010, Vol 13, Issue 13

Abstract

Dignity is a specific value of human being deep-rooted in the ontical structure of the person and its personal condition. In his teaching, John Paul II points to the natural and supernatural character of human dignity. The pope stresses that human being was endowed with supernatural dignity through creation, since it was created in God’s own image. The full affirmation of dignity takes place in the Revelation – in the contact between God and man. The elevation of dignity is completed by the act of redemption. In the mystery of redemption, human being finds their value and importance. John Paul II sees dignity as an internal mark of human being inherent in its nature. The natural foundation of dignity is seated in human rationality and freedom. Among all the creation only human is a person – a free and rational entity – and therefore constitutes the centre and culmination of everything that exists on earth. In John Paul II’s opinion, human dignity needs to be accepted as a fundamental source of human rights. Human being is the subject of inalienable rights granted not by other equal subjects but arising from its nature; these rights emerge from what is most deeply human and are immersed in human dignity.
