Dimensions of mental health and academic performance in adolescents in Peru

Abstract
Resuming face-to-face education after the COVID-19 pandemic has generated different psychological reactions, deriving in health problem such as symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression in addition to behavioral problems that reflect in the academic performance of the students. This study aimed to determine the relationship between mental health and academic performance of high-school students in a city on the Peruvian coast. The approach was quantitative, explanatory level, cross-sectional and correlational-causal design. For mental health data, Goldberg's health questionnaire was used, which consists of 28 questions divided into four dimensions. School grades were collected from a digital record used in Peru (SIAGIE) out of a sample of 272 students from the third, fourth and fifth year of high school. The results obtained showed that there was no relationship between mental health and academic performance (p >0.05); Likewise, between the somatic symptom, insomnia and anxiety, social dysfunction (p>0.05). However, a significant relationship was evident between the depression as symptom and academic performance (p =0.037). It was concluded that there is an inverse and significant relationship between the depression symptom and the academic performance of students in the third, fourth and fifth year of the high school.
