Self-medication in the Covid-19 pandemic. Systematic review

Journal Title: Revista Eugenio Espejo - Year 2024, Vol 18, Issue 3

Abstract

Self-medication is a habit, in which individuals choose to take medications without a doctor's prescription to alleviate minor ailments or conditions. Recent studies showed that this practice increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. A systematic review of the literature was performed by searching scientific articles in databases: Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, ProQuest, Taylor & Francis, SciELO, Redalyc and ResearchGate, reaching a total of 44 articles related to the topic, published between the years 2017-2023. It was evidenced that self-medication reached between 23.3 % and 71.40 % during the pandemic, causing overdose, gastrointestinal complications and insomnia. The most consumed medications were: analgesics, antibiotics, and vitamin supplements. Self-medication during the COVID-19 pandemic increased considerably worldwide, justifying its practice as a form of prevention or management of the signs and symptoms of the disease.
