Diuretic and Natriuretic Activity of an Aqueous Extract of Bridelia Ferruginea Benth. (Euphorbiaceae) in Normal Rats
Journal Title: Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology Advances - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 10
Abstract
In the African traditional medicine, Bridelia ferruginea Benth is used for the treatment of hypertension and as diuretic. Since, the diuretic activity of this substance has not been investigated scientifically. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the diuretic potential of aqueous extract of this plant in normal rats. The experiments were carried out under the same conditions with synthetic pharmacological diuretics (furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, and spironolactone). A single dose of each substance was used. The aqueous extract of Bridelia ferruginea, 24 hours after its administration intraperitoneally in the rat, provokes a significant elimination (p0.01) of the water overload. This extract causes the increase in natriuresis and in kaliuresis respectively of 55.71% (p0.01) and of 49.80 (p0.01). It increases significantly (p0.01) plasma sodium level (natremy). The Na+/K+ urinary ratio indicates that the aqueous extract of Bridelia ferruginea induces the natriuresis. These studies show that this extract has diuretic and natriuretic effects that tend toward those of furosemide. These results seem to justify its use in traditional medicine to treat hypertension and as diuretic.

Do CB1 Cannabinoid Receptors Regulate Insulin Signalling in Rat Primary Skeletal Muscle Cells?
The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression and signalling of CB1 cannabinoid receptors and the impact of CB1 activation and inhibition upon insulin signalling in rat primary skeletal muscle cells. QRT-PC...
Hemostasis: A Cell Based Model
For centuries homeostasis have been explained on the basis of the coagulation cascade where two separate pathways converge on a common pathway leading to the formation of thrombin. Thrombin in turn converts fibrinogen to...
Cardioprotective Effects of Potassium Channel Openers on Rat Atria and Isolated Hearts under Acute Hypoxia
Under hypoxia, sarcolemmal KATP (sarcKATP) and mitochondrial KATP (mitoKATP) channels exert cardioprotective effects via different mechanisms. In the present study, effects of potassium channel openers (KCOs) on electrop...
Effect of Gongronema Latifolium Leaves Ethanolic Extract on Paracetamol-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats
Gongronema latifolium is a perennial edible plant used locally, especially in the South-Eastern Nigeria as spice in foods or eaten raw for its medicinal benefit. It has been noted for its anti-diabetic, anti-hypertensive...
