Doping of urea-formaldehyde resin with quebracho tannin – the effect on bond shear strength and formaldehyde emission

Abstract
Doping of urea-formaldehyde resin with quebracho tannin – the effect on bond shear strength and formaldehyde emission. A commercial urea-formaldehyde resin was blended with 1%wt and 10%wt of quebracho tannin. The effect of the tannin was examined on the bondlines in solid wood as well as in 12-mm thick one-layer particleboards. It was shown that tannin shortened adhesive gel time, did not affect the dry shear strength of bondlines in wood, decreased bondline water resistance and resulted in slightly reduced formaldehyde emission from particleboards.
