DYNAMIKA JESIENNEJ WĘDRÓWKI PTAKÓW W KRAJOBRAZIE ROLNICZYM POD RADZYNIEM PODLASKIM (NIZINA POŁUDNIOWOPODLASKA)
Journal Title: KULON - Year 2015, Vol 20, Issue
Abstract
In the period of 19 August-18 November 2013, we observed autumn migration of birds in the agricultural landscape of the South-Podlasian Lowland (E. Poland). Two methods, point survey and transect survey, were used to count birds on 12 dates. Counts at three observation points located 1.5 km apart were conducted for 4 hours (2, 1, 1) on alternate days with counts along three transects, each 1 km long. The total observation time was 66 hours, including 48 hours at observation points and 18 hours along transects. In sum, 56 migrating species represented by 13 997 individuals were noted. The most abundant species comprised the Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs (6961 individuals, 48.9%), Skylark Alauda arvensis (1722 ind. – 12.3%) and Swallow Hirundo rustica (1083 ind. – 7.7%). The species that contributed to more than 1% of the migrating birds included the Wood pigeon Columba palumbus, Greenfinch Carduelis chloris, Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava, Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis, Siskin Carduelis spinus, White Wagtail Motacilla alba, Blue Tit Cyanistes caeruleus, Great Tit Parus major, and Tree Pipit Anthus trivialis. There was a high similarity in the dominance structure between bird assemblages estimated by the point counts and transect counts – Re=73%, but a lower similarity in the species composition – QS=63.4%. Only the similarity in number dynamic of White Wagtail and Swallow was sufficiently high to apply both methods for them alternatively. Neither of these methods yields a full picture of bird migration, and both are complementary, as one is more suitable for the active phase of migration, that is, for long distance flight, and the other for the stopover phase.
