Abstract
Today´s seniors are the last generation to experience a childhood with no competition from mass media and electronic media. It is a generation raised in high regard for the written word and often mention in their lives sacrum of the book. The paper is based on research conducted among the students of the University of the Third Age of the University of Wrocław. The analysis of the respondents´ surveys allowed us to map the typology of the most popular books in their childhood and youth, their authors and titles as well descriptions of the most signifi cant obstacles in access to books. Drama and romance literature turned out to be the most popular among respondents. Polish classics, present in mandatory school reading lists and other cultural contexts, were nearly as popular. Respondents also enjoyed travel and adventure books, foreign classics, and fairy tales. Apart from books popular in Poland and around the world, respondents frequently mentioned works unavailable on the publishing and media market for many years which attest to the strong emotional impression they had in their youth. The memories of respondents were dominated by indications of pieces by Polish writers.
