Abstract

Electronics industry is one of fastest growing manufacturing industry in India. But the increase in sales of electronic goods and their rapid obsolescence has resulted in generation of electronic waste, which is popularly known as e-waste. In India, the e-waste market is mostly unorganized and companies are neither registered nor authorized and operate informally. At most of the places e-waste is treated as municipal waste because India does not have any dedicated legislation for management of e-waste. In India the E-waste generation is 332979 in 2007. In 2011 the production of E-waste is 487515, and it is 84610 more than 2009. E-waste generated in few cities across the nation show an alarming picture. In India Mumbai is on the top in terms of E-waste generation followed by Delhi with 9730.5 metric tonnes e-waste. This paper reveals the current scenario of E-waste generation in India, assess the management practices in the country and review the existing legislation.
