Early childhood caries in relation to sweet foods consumption and teeth hygiene procedures in nursery-age children

Abstract
Background: The accurate and regular cleaning of the oral cavity, connected to the anticaries feed scheme, it is essential to reduce the risk of early childhood caries (ECC). Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate of the prevalence of early childhood caries in nursery-age children and to evaluate the influence of sweets consumption and teeth brushing on development of early childhood caries. Methods: The study comprised 346 children from 7 to 48 months of age. In study the following factors were evaluated: caries frequency Fp (prevalence) - the percentage of patients suffering from caries (dmft > 0). Results: The frequency of caries in the researched group of children was 44.51%. Statistical analysis showed significantly lower caries among children who no ate sweets and children, whose parents took an active part in cleaning the teeth, or the children themselves regularly cleaning teeth. Conclusions: The survey results confirm the need to intensify educational activities of young children about proper eating habits and hygiene, since the use of correct rules have a significant impact on attendance caries. Early elimination of improper eating habits and respect for the fundamental principles of oral hygiene give a chance to maintain a healthy deciduous teeth.
