Eating habits of adolescents from the Silesian Region

Abstract
introduction: Health behaviours exert a direct or indirect effect on human health and life. A health promoting lifestyle conducive to health includes rational eating habits. Nutritional routines are especially important in early childhood and youth, and the state of health during the period of adolescence has a decisive influence on health in older age. aim of the study: The aim of the study was to evaluate heating habits of young people attending selected secondary schools in the Silesian Region. materials and methods: The study included a group of 814 adolescents attending secondary school – 264 boys and 550 girls. Dietary behaviours were assessed using a questionnaire designed by the author. results: It was found that almost a half of the respondents (47%)) most often consumed 4 or 5 meals daily, girls more frequently than boys. Daily consumption of a second breakfast was declared by more than a half of the surveyed girls and boys. It was found that 1/3 of girls and boys did not snack between meals. In the presented study, with respect to the consumption of fruit and vegetables, it was found that almost a half of respondents included these products in their menu several times a day. The largest percentage of respondents declared the consumptiopn of grits more rarely than once a week, about 74% of girls and 70% boys. conclusions: Significant differences in eating habits were found between the groups of girls and boys. Inadequate nutritional habits were observed in the study group. It is recommended that education should be provided, orientated towards the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviour among adolescents.
