Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2012, Vol 18, Issue 2

Abstract

introduction: Diagnosis of uterine cervix pathology, especially a cancerous condition, causes many adaptation problems, and is among the greatest sources of anxiety for the patients. The majority of them develop symptoms of emotional stress, i.e. depression, fear, or anger, and suffer from various physical symptoms resulting from the disease and its treatment. The attitude of the female to her present and future life is essential for proper recovery and adaptation to living with her illness.objective: The purpose of study was to investigate the level of coherence among women treated for uterine cervix pathologies.Material and methods: The study was conducted in the group of 90 females treated for uterine cervix erosions, dysplasia and cervical cancer, in a gynecological outpatient clinic and three hospitals in Lublin. The survey study used a questionnaire developed for the purpose, a question sheet to gather data and Orientation to Life Questionnaire 29 (OTLQ-29) by Antonovsky to evaluate coherence.results: The great majority of respondents (66, i.e. 73.3%) stated that their first response to diagnosis was anxiety and more than half admitted to fear – 52, i.e. 57.8%. They reported pain as the most fearful factor. Potential maximum score was 203 (general index); the respondents’ scores ranged 87-167, mean 133.2. Every fourth woman scored <122 and 75% respondents <142.conclusions: The type of disease diagnosed did not affect the sense of coherence. A higher level of coherence was significantly more frequent among the women who were operated on, compared to the patients who were prescribed additional radiotherapy or radiotherapy and chemotherapy (p<0.05).Key words: woman, sense of coherence, cervical cancer
