Ecological Awareness of Future Managers
Journal Title: Journal of Corporate Responsibility and Leadership - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue 3
Abstract
Purpose: Ecological awareness is an ambiguous term, differently defined in the literature. In broad terms, it can be understood as the entirety of the ideas, values and opinions about the environment as the place of human being. The increase in the level of ecological awareness, especially among managers, is an essential condition for achieving the objectives of sustainable development of economies. The main purpose of the article is to present and analyse chosen results of a survey on the environmental awareness of future managers. Design/methodology/approach: The research was aimed at identifying attitudes and views on environmental issues, examining the level of ecological knowledge, indicating the activities undertaken by respondents, as well as assessing the approach to broadly understood pro-ecological actions of future managers as decision-makers in enterprises. The survey was conducted in May 2016 in a group of 194 students of the first, second and third degree studies at the Faculty of Management at the Częstochowa University of Technology. The research was carried out using the Paper and Pen Personal Interview method (PAPI). Purpose: In the digital economy the managerial functions of integration and coordination were transformed radically, challenges of leadership and management acquired a new sound. So far, various theories of leadership, based on the study of leadership qualities and leadership situations, have been developed. The Great Man theory, the trait theory of leadership qualities, behavioural theories, contingency theory and situational theory are the most recognised among them. But the management tools and methods that were effective in the post-industrial society shall not apply to the digital economy conditions. The employment of new opportunities Journal of Corporate Responsibility and Leadership L eadership and Human Resource Management in the World of Positivity, Corporate Responsibility and Digital Economy Findings: The level of ecological awareness among the surveyed group of future managers is insufficient, which may affect the actions of the organisations managed by them in the future. As the research has shown, the surveyed students have shortcomings in environmental knowledge. They are most aware of the issues that are often addressed in mass media. Therefore, it is necessary to create an education system that will make managers more sensitive to the needs of the environment. Research and practical limitations/implications: The research should be treated as a pilot study. It was conducted only among students of one of the faculties educating future managers, which, in consequence, does not allow to draw conclusions regarding all future managers. No analysis was made in regard to the field or the year of study, nevertheless, the results obtained indicate that it is necessary to conduct such analyses regularly and in a wide range. Originality/value: Although the subject of environmental awareness of students is discussed in literature, there is often no indication of the relationship between the level of ecological awareness of management students and their professional future. This article shows the connection between environmental education and future pro-environmental attitudes of managers. Paper type: empirical.
