Journal Title: RSBO - Year 2008, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction: The school has been considered an appropriate place for the development of health programs. The possibility of introducing actions of this type was the driving force behind this study. Objective: To evaluate the knowledge and attitudes relating to health and oral hygiene, among elementary school teachers in a town in Santa Catarina. Material and methods: This investigation consisted of a descriptive study, of the transversal type, through an investigation of data obtained by means of a questionnaire. The target population was 115 teachers working with first to fifth grades, which constituted a non-probabilistic sample (n=74), representing 64.34% of the target population. To determine the teachers’ level of knowledge, specific categories were created, classifying their knowledge as good, regular and unsatisfactory. Results: The research subjects experienced difficulty accessing the information, content and subject matter relating to oral health, as these themes are generally not addressed in professional development courses. The majority did not have enough specific knowledge to carry out an educational work in oral health with their pupils, since only 8% were classified as having a good level of knowledge. Conclusion: It is necessary to provide theoretical and practical support to these educators that will enable them to address these subjects in an appropriate way. For this, it is necessary to promote the adoption of new strategies for continuing education, through a multiprofessional work involving the active participation of dental surgeons and elementary education teachers.
