Abstract
The text works with a broad concept of education, other than the restricted to processes and educational institutions, teaching, research and extension-formal education itself. It is divided into two parts. The first, which is referenced in the late 1990, covers the formal education and the reforms undertaken in the field of education, in its general guidelines, with emphasis on processes occurring in Brazil from the point of view of their negotiations, obstacles, and generated political conflicts. Those reforms gave the basis for a new model of education, expanded to other subjects in addition to the curriculum. The second part focuses on current events, in the Latin American scenario, nonformal education processes.
