Educational needs of adult population: results of empirical research

Abstract
The article raises the most urgent problems of the modern educational paradigm: the planned transition from the concept of "education for the whole life" to "lifelong education", social attitude and understanding of the essence of andragogy and adult education, challenges of adult education in Ukraine, person’s motivation to acquire or continue education in adulthood. The purpose of the article is to show the state, needs and prospects of the educational services market for the adult population in Chernivtsi. The corresponding pilot empirical research was conducted at the first stage of a joint UkrainianGerman research project aimed at developing the concept of specialization "Adult education and postgraduate education" in higher educational institutions of Ukraine. The results of the questionnaire of three groups of respondents, which included both real and potential participants in the adult education process, were exposed and analyzed. Such a sample is sufficient to extrapolate the obtained results to the adult education system in general. Methodological basis of the research are the provisions of the humanistic philosophy of education, the conceptual provisions of pedagogy, andragogy and psychology of adult education. Graphical and descriptive representation of the received results allows to form adequate ideas about the orientation of the adults’ educational demands, the level of satisfaction with the available educational proposals, recognition of necessity to professionalize and academicize this area of educational services by all participants in the adult education process. The research has shown that the educational services market for the adult population is actually functioning and active, but chaotic. This proves: practical experience in the field of adult education needs systematization, scientific reflection and holistic theoretical substantiation.
