Effect of aerobic exercise at various intensities on salivary α-amylase

Journal Title: International Journal of Applied Exercise Physiology - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise at various intensities on α- amylase activity. 10 healthy inactive boy students(mean age 23.2±2.35 years, height 172.9±4.25 cm, weight 67.8±0.084 kg, fat percentage 15.98±3.85, VO2max 38.49±6.43 ml.kg.min-1) participated with using a randomized design in three experimental treadmill trials: 50% maximal oxygen uptake(VO2max), 75% VO2max and an incremental test to exhaustion. The durations of the trials were the same as for a preliminary incremental test to exhaustion (18 min). Unstimulated saliva samples were collected before exercise, immediately after exercise, and 1 hour after exercise. To analyze data, used an ANOVA repeated measure and Bonferoni post hoc test level of significance assumed at least p≤0.05. Result of the investigation indicated that the α-amylase activity had significantly decreased in incremental to exhaustion. However, although 1 hour after exercise at 50% VO2max α-amylase activity increased, but this increase was not significant relative to before exercise. No significant changes were observed at 75% VO2max.therefore, it was concluded that high-intensity exercise to exhaustion decreases the activity rate of α-amylase without change in the saliva flow rate. These may be due to change in the sympathetic system activity
