Effect of calpastatin gene (CAST) polymorphism on pork quality
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2016, Vol 34, Issue 1
Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess the effect of calpastatin gene (CAST/RsaI) polymorphism on technological and sensory quality of pork, the range of glycolytic and proteolytic post mortem changes and slaughter value. The up-till-now study results on the correlation between CAST/RsaI polymorphism and pork quality are inconsistent and the effect of the CAST gene polymorphism on meat quality is not fully explained. The research was carried out on 65 hybrid pigs of the PenArLan breeding company. Fatteners of the DD genotype at locus CAST/RsaI had higher meat content in carcass, higher ultimate pH and cooking yield, lower glycolytic potential and protein content as compared to CD and CC genotypes. This has been reflected in higher sensory tenderness. Results concerning the proteolysis level of myofibrillar proteins indicated that the DD genotype was intermediate between CC and CD. In conclusion, fatteners of the DD genotype are more suitable for meat production and pork quality than the other CAST/RsaI genotypes.

Power of different microsatellite panels for paternity analysis in sheep
The aim of this work was to develop and to test PCR-based suitable microsatellite marker panels for paternity testing in sheep. Blood samples were collected from 212 Kivircik sheep (24 rams and their 188 offspring) rais...
The effect of organic vs. conventional rearing system on performance, carcass traits and meat quality of fast and slow growing rabbits
The effect of different housing systems was evaluated on productive performances and carcass and meat quality of a “local grey” population of rabbits (G). To compare data obtained from G, commercial hybrid rabbits (H) we...
Effects of dietary natural antioxidant supplementation on broiler chicken and Muscovy duck meat quality
A total of 150 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) and 120 one-day-old female Muscovy ducklings were distributed over 15 and 12 pens, respectively. All birds received the same diet during the first period of life....
Effect of dietary linseed and rapeseed supplementation on fatty acid profiles in the ostrich. Part 1. Muscles
Forty ostriches were raised in five groups [control (C) or with 4% (L4) or 8% (L8) linseed, or 5% (R5) or 10% (R10) rapeseed in the diet]. Linseed supplementation (L4 and L8) improved the nutritive value of the ostrich m...
In vitro screening of immunomodulatory properties of synbiotics in chicken DT40 cell line
Synbiotics (prebiotic & probiotic) are used to stimulate the proper composition of the intestinal microflora in farm animals. One of the desired properties of synbiotics is connected with the immunostimulatory potential...
