Effect of Controlled Gas Nitriding on the Durability of the Barrels of Small Arms

Abstract

The project research – development, implemented in a consortium: Institute of Precision Mechanics (Warsaw, Poland), Military University of Technology (Warsaw, Poland) and Small Arms Factory (Radom, Poland), studies were undertaken of the possibility and desirability of replacing the electrolytic chromium plating technology used in the production of small arms barrels of 5.56 mm. So far, the barrel of small arms calibre 5.56 mm, and the like are mostly produced from low-alloy structural steels, similar to that used for the purpose of domestic steel 30HN2MFA. The aim was to search for new technologies such as multiplex thermo-chemical properties, combined with the deep freeze, which can ensure the sustainability of the final gun with less onerous technologies for the environment. One such method is the quenching barrel, connected in a closed technological cycle of the deep freeze and then subjected to nitriding gas industries regulated. The results of investigations of processes controlled gas nitriding grade alloy steel construction 38HMJ, used for machine parts, exposed in operation to corrosion, friction wear and fatigue and thermal shock, provided to replace the currently used barrel steel 30HN2MFA. Nitriding process was carried out in the temperature range 520-560°C and at times 4-6 h, in an atmosphere of N2 or NH3-NH3zdys. with the settlement of their composition and potential for nitrogen during the heating process and temperature. Provides examples and discusses the impact of process solutions for the production of nitrided layers on 38HMJ iron nitride layer at the surface, designed for corrosive and tribological exposure and limited iron nitride layer at the surface, intended for exposures of fatigues. For both types of nitrided layers determined resistance to frictional wear and impact resistance. Phenomena, brittleness and cracks bombardment nitrided layers after 10 000 rounds.
