Effect of different level of potassium fertilization on winter oilseed rape nutritional status at the initiation of the main stem growth and on the seed yield

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2010, Vol 31, Issue 1

Abstract

This paper presents the results of studies on the effect of imbalanced fertilization of winter oilseed rape with potassium on plant nutritional status at the beginning of the elongation phase (BBCH31) and on yield of seeds. In years 2004–2006 three series of field experiments were conducted at Poznań University experimental station at Brody. During the study the K optimum treatment, established on the basis of analysis of a crop fertilizer requirements, which amounted to 150 kg K·ha-1, was compared with the reduced K treatments, i.e. 50%, 25% and 0% of 150 kg K·ha-1 and the absolute control. Rates of other applied nutrients were constant and amounted to 180 kg N, 26 kg P and 15 kg Mg·ha-1. Content of nutrients in oilseed plants grown on the control plot was, excluding phosphorus, copper and iron, much lower in comparison to the fertilized ones. The conducted analysis of nutritional status of oilseed rape plants clearly indicated that calcium and potassium were nutrients limiting the yield of seeds. Moreover, content of calcium significantly correlated with content of other nutrients at the stage of BBCH 31, which stresses the importance of calcium for their accumulation in a plant. In addition, calcium also significantly affected relationships between nutrients, which was found for the following pairs: N : K and Na : Ca. However, differentiated rates of potassium did not affect yield of oilseed rape seeds.
