Effect of Topical Application of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in the Treatment of Chronic Gingivitis: A Clinical Study
Journal Title: Journal of Medical Research and Practice - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 6
Abstract
Aim The effect of topical application of the omega-3 fatty acid gels has been evaluated as an adjunct to scaling over a period of 4 weeks in patients with chronic gingivitis. Materials and Methods The present study was a single-blinded, randomized, two-arm parallel design. A total of 40 systemically healthy patients with chronic generalized gingivitis were randomly assigned by block randomization into two groups with 20 in each group: Group A - Omega 3 fatty acid plus scaling and Group B- only scaling. After a thorough scaling, the subjects of Group A were instructed to apply a pea-sized gel assigned to them twice a day after brushing and leave it for 5–10 min before rinsing for a period of 4 weeks. The clinical parameters viz. Turesky Glickman Gilmore modification of the Quigley Hein Plaque Index (PI), Modified Gingival Index (MGI), Saxtons Bleeding Index (BI) and gingival redness (GR) score were recorded at baseline and at the end of the study period, i.e. 4 weeks. Results There was a significant reduction in the mean PI, MGI, BI and GR at 4 weeks when compared to the baseline within both the groups. A significant difference was found between the two groups with respect to mean MGI, BI and GR scores at 4 weeks (P = 0.00 for all parameters). Conclusion The Omega fatty acid group showed better result compared to the other group.
