Correlation of Oligohydramnios with Perinatal Outcome

Journal Title: Journal of Medical Research and Practice - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 3

Abstract

Aim To determine whether an antepartum or intrapartum low amniotic fluid index (AFI) is a predictor of adverse perinatal outcome in low risk pregnancies. Methods This was a prospective study conducted among 150 pregnant women at 37–41.6 weeks of gestation with no known obstetric or medical complications, with AFI ≤ 5 cm. The results were analyzed using chi-square test and P-value of 0.05 is taken to be significant association. Results The cesarean section rate, non-reactive NST (non-stress test) and low birth weight was higher in patients with oligohydramnis (P = 0.007, 0.0003 and 0.0001, respectively). There was no significant difference in meconium staining of liquor, APGAR score <7 at 5 minutes of birth and NICU admission rate between oligohydramnios and normal pregnancies (P = 0.322, 0.337, 0.155, respectively). Conclusion Oligohydramnios has a significant correlation with rate of cesarean section, non-reactive NST and low birth weight babies
