EFFECT OF TV SERIES ADAPTED FROM LITERARY WORKS UPON READING

Abstract

Turning the action of reading into a lifelong habit is among the objectives of teaching reading. Reading, as a part of lifelong learning, changes in accordance with the changes in the environment and with the technological developments. In this process; mass media, especially television, has a strong effect on reading habits. The purpose of this study is to determine –in terms of the relation among literature, education, television– the effect of TV series which are adapted from stories or novels upon reading tendencies of middle school students, high school students and undergraduates. While the population of the study consists of middle school students, high school students and undergraduates; the sample includes 17 cities and 1693 students from various middle schools, high schools and universities in these cities. A questionnaire formed according to literature review method was employed for the study. The data has been stated with frequency (n) and percent (%) values. As a result of the study; it has been determined that TV series adapted from books have a positive effect on reading habits of students and create some interest in the books from which the TV series were adapted, in the authors of the books and in the other books of the authors.
