Effects and phytotherapeutic properties of Artemisia vulgaris, Urtica dioica, Marrubium vulgare, Thymus hyssopus, and Aloysia triphylla on geneto-urinary diseases
Journal Title: PhytoChem & BioSub Journal - Year 2018, Vol 12, Issue 2
Abstract
Medicinal plants of natural origin, potentially antimicrobial led us to look at bioactive molecules of plants from African biodiversity for the synthesis of drugs or pharmaceutically active compounds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect and spectrum of activity of five medicinal plants Artemisia vulgaris, Urtica dioica, Marrubium vulgare, Thymus hyssopus, and Aloysia triphylla against ten strains responsible for geneto-urinary infectious diseases in women. Comparative tests with antibiotics piperaciline, streptomyicin, cloxaciline, and trimethaprine were also included in the trials. The essential oils were isolated by hydrodistillation using the Clevenger apparatus. The results obtained show that these medicinal plants have a very effective antimicrobial activity and a wide spectrum of activity compared to the antibiotics which have a satisfactory activity towards the majority of the strains studied, which indicates that the essential oils and their secondary metabolites have a significant potential as antimicrobial agents to treat geneto-urinary infections.
