Effects of accelerated ageing method on chosen physical and mechanical properties of thermally modified ash wood (Fraxinus excelsior L.)

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to test the influence of accelerated ageing method based on ASTM D 1037:1999 standard, on chosen mechanical (MOE, MOR and hardness) and physical properties of thermally modified ash wood (Fraxinus excelsior L.). As a control material non-thermally modified ash wood was tested. Thermal modification of ash wood decreased density of material. Artificial ageing of wood caused changes in macro and microstructure of the wood and consequence of changes are reduction of hardness, MOE and MOR, specially for thermally modified ash wood. As a result of thermal modification of wood were created visible and invisible macroscopically radial cracks . These cracks were widened in the artificially aged wood. As a result of thermal modification it was also observed changes in cell walls.
