Effects of combined therapy on bone mineral density

Journal Title: Przegląd Menopauzalny - Year 2006, Vol 23, Issue 1

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a chronic disease of the bone system, predisposing to increased bone fracture risk, resulting from decreased bone strength. Bone mineral density is one of bone strength components. It has been proven that more than 50% of bone mass loss in women is associated with menopause. The increased number of patients with osteoporosis, as observed during the recent years, may favour elevated mortality and increased costs of care and treatment. There are several options of osteoporosis prevention and therapy. It seems that a combined application of antiresorptive or anabolic treatments should better improve bone mineral density, when compared with monotherapy. The presented paper summarizes the observations of the combined therapy.
