Journal Title: Shanghai Journal of Preventive Medicine - Year 2023, Vol 35, Issue 2
Abstract
ObjectiveTo analyze the effects of different feeding patterns on the physical and nutritional status of children aged 6â12 monthsï¼ so as to provide reference for promoting scientific feeding and health development of infants and young children.MethodsChildren born between December 2019 and February 2020 and who had completed three follow-up visits at 6âï¼ 9â ï¼8â10 monthsï¼ and 12â ï¼11â14 monthsï¼ months old in all of the 13 communities of Minhangï¼ Shanghai were selected. The subjectsâ basic information was investigated by questionnaires. The indicators including feeding patternï¼ physical development ï¼body weightï¼ body lengthï¼ head circumferenceï¼ and nutritional status ï¼the detection rate of overweightï¼ obesityï¼ low body weightï¼ growth retardationï¼ emaciation and iron deficiency anemiaï¼ were followed up in the outpatient departmentï¼ with iron deficiency anemia only monitored at the 6â and 12â months old. According to different feeding patternsï¼ the groups of 6â months old were divided into three groups of exclusive breast feeding ï¼EBFï¼ï¼ mixed feeding ï¼MFï¼ and artificial feeding ï¼AFï¼ï¼ while 9â and 12â months old were divided into MF and AF groups. The differences of basic information and follow-up results among the groups were analyzed.ResultsA total of 470 children were includedï¼ including 130 ï¼27.66%ï¼ï¼ 288 ï¼61.28%ï¼ and 52 ï¼11.06%ï¼ respectively in EBFï¼ MF and AF groups at the 6â months oldï¼and 319 ï¼67.87%ï¼ and 196 ï¼41.70%ï¼ in MF group at the 9â and 12â months old. There was no significant difference in the other follow-up results among the groups. The detection rate of iron deficiency anemia in 6â months old EBF ï¼13.08%ï¼ was higher than that in MF group ï¼5.90%ï¼ and AF group ï¼1.92%ï¼ ï¼Ï2=8.40ï¼ P=0.010ï¼ï¼ while it was still higher in 12â months old MF group ï¼9.69%ï¼ than in AF group ï¼2.92%ï¼ ï¼Ï2=9.68ï¼ P=0.002ï¼.ConclusionThere is no significant difference in body weightï¼body lengthï¼ head circumferenceï¼ and the detection rates of overweightï¼ obesityï¼ low body weightï¼ growth retardation and emaciation among the groups of different feeding patterns in the children aged 6â12 months. The detection rate of iron deficiency anemia in the EBF and MF groups is significantly higher than that in the AF groups of children aged 6â and 12â months old.
