Abstract
(The Photographic Career of the Misfortunate Vilma Halász (1888–1938)) Vilma Halász learnt photography as a student of József Pécsi in Budapest. Her brother, Ferenc Halász Jr. began studying painting at the Hungarian College of Fine Arts in 1912. She ran a successful photo studio in the center of Budapest from October 1916 onwards. The siblings also owned an apartment in the city center. Hungarian picture magazines mainly published photographs by the young Vilma Halász taken in the theatrical world. Her photos of sensual, erotic subjects were published in German magazines in the late 1920s and the early 1930s. Her painter brother died from heart failure at the age of 42 in 1938. Reacting to his death Vilma Halász committed suicide . Her images published by the German press have been made accessible to researchers only recently.
