«EIGHT AND A HALF», OR THE THESES FOR THE ROUND TABLE ON HERMENEUTICS, taking place under an aegis of the society «Odessa humanities tradition»
Journal Title: Δόξα / Докса. Збірник наукових праць з філософії та філології - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue
Abstract
This text deals with the theses and questions to be discussed at the Round Table on Hermeneutics. The theses and questions are related to the fundamental hermeneutic concepts: text, interpretation, understanding, meaning and sense. Discussing these concepts, the participants answer the key question about the essence of Hermeneutics. What Hermeneutics is: is it a science or a special research standpoint, an art or a method etc.? What principles must Hermeneutics follow and how the process of interpretation correlates with a personality of philosopher? It is suggested to define the connections of Hermeneutics with the contiguous fields of knowledge: Semiotics, Rhetoric, Logic and Linguistics. An author asserts that text (or its sense) is always more than its understanding, that the hermeneutic standpoint presupposes trust relationship to text and that an understanding is limited to a sense. Particular attention is paid to the essence of concepts-procedures «interpretation» and «understanding» and their correlations. In the conclusion of the theses and the questions the author examines concepts «hermeneutic circle» and «hermeneutic field» in their relation to the human existence and raises the ultimate question: whether it is possible to go out from a hermeneutic circle and whether this exit doesn’t coincide with the exit out of the being.
