Energy characteristics of single-phase active current-source rectifier with sinusoidal and trapezoidal pulse-width modulation

Abstract
A high power factor (more than 0.9) of AC electric locomotive with traction DC motors can be obtained using traction converters with full-controlled IGBT transistors. Now the actual task is the development of energy-efficient algorithms for controlling these converters. This article describes a single-phase active current-source rectifier for DC traction motors. Using the developed MATLAB model, the behavior of the active current-source rectifier with sinusoidal and trapezoidal pulse width modulation is investigated. Simulation results are obtained for two values of the modulation frequency of 900 Hz and 1200 Hz. The value of DC voltage, the power factor and the trolley-wire voltage and current waveform distortion are investigated. With a modulation index of 0.2...1, the power factor is 0.6...0.99 with a low distortion of the trolley-wire voltage waveform. A THD of trolley-wire voltage is up to 1.7%. A higher value of DC voltage with a modulation index of 1.0 is in case of trapezoidal pulse width modulation.
