ENHANCING SENTENCE CONSTRUCTION SKILLS OF GRADE 7 LEARNERS OF LABORATORY HIGH SCHOOL THROUGH SENTENCE CHALLENGE GAME

Abstract
This study determines the effectiveness of the Sentence Challenge Game in enhancing the sentence construction skills of Grade 7 Junior High School learners of ISPSC Laboratory High School during the school year 2022-2023. This study attempted to determine the significant difference between the performance of the students before and after they are exposed to the Sentence Challenge Game. The one group pretest-posttest design was utilized in the conduct of this study. There are 34 students who served as participants of the study. An adapted identification type of test in a form of pretest and posttest were administered in gathering the data. The test is composed of 50 items. The data were studied and analyzed as well as computed using the percentage mean and t-test dependent sample while the responses were saturated, categorized and thematized. It reveals that after the use of the Sentence Challenge Game, the sentence construction skills of the learners are very satisfactory when it comes to performance with a 38.12 as a mean score. This means that the performance of the learners is higher than the pretest which is satisfactory in performance with a mean score of 21.68. The computed t-value of the pretest and posttest was 7.62 which is higher than the tabular t-value which is 1.69 at 0.05 level of significance. This means that there is a significant difference in the level of sentence construction skills of the learners before and after they were exposed to the sentence challenge game which indicates that Sentence Challenge game is effective in enhancing the sentence construction skills. The following are the conclusions are formulated: 1.) Most of the Grade 7 learners had improved their skills in sentence construction after executing the lesson using the sentence challenge game;2.) The instructional materials used in the Sentence Challenge Game were very highly accepted as a tool in improving the sentence construction skills of the Grade 7 learners;3.) There is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the Grade 7 learners; 4.) The use of Sentence Challenge Game is appropriate and efficient in enhancing the sentence construction skills of the learners. The recommendations based from the results and conclusions are the following: 1.) Language teachers must introduce wide range of strategies that will help the learners enhance their writing skills specifically their sentence construction; 2.) English teachers should integrate the use of the Sentence Challenge Game instructional materials to further enhance the sentence construction skills of the learners; 3.) School Administrators should encourage and give opportunities to teachers to attend seminars regarding teaching techniques and methods in teaching English; 4.) Future researchers can have another study about the Sentence Challenge Game in a wider scope for further assessment and evaluation in its effectiveness as a strategy in enhancing the sentence construction skills of the learners.
