Entrepreneurial Intention of Students at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana: Exploring a Model Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior

Journal Title: Revista CEA - Year 2022, Vol 8, Issue 17

Abstract

This case study aimed to characterize the intention to start a new business of students at different campuses (Montería, Palmira, Medellín, and Bucaramanga) of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB). The purpose of this paper is to define strategies that help to consolidate and strengthen UPB’s educational pathway, degree programs, content, and institutional promotion of entrepreneurship. This study adopted the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). According to the TPB, the intention to have a specific behavior (e.g., entrepreneurial intention) is determined by attitudes (e.g., towards starting a new business), subjective norms, and perceived behavior control. The empirical analysis in this study adopted a quantitative approach to the data provided by an online survey answered by undergraduate students at the four campuses mentioned above. Using a sample of 4,214 questionnaires answered by enrolled students, factor analysis was employed to establish the structure of the main variables in the theoretical model. Additionally, other constructs were also explored, such as opportunities and resources in the environment and advantages and disadvantages of entrepreneurship. The inferential analysis included (1) multiple linear regression to determine the influence of the antecedents of entrepreneurial intention and (2) variance analysis to examine the difference between the constructs based on groups of informants classified by sociodemographic characteristics. The results validated the influence of the three main antecedents of entrepreneurial intention according to the TPB, as well as that of the presence of entrepreneurial relatives (in particular, if the father is a partner in or owns a company). Additionally, entrepreneurial intention is influenced by opportunities in the environment and the advantages of entrepreneurship perceived by individuals.
