Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 9

Abstract

Obesity is a multifactoral disease and its development is caused by several interactions between genes and environment. In recent years the attention has been focused on the role the environment plays in shaping nutritional behaviour of children and adolescents, especially in the context of counteracting overweight and obesity. The aim of this review was to investigate available studies in terms of identifying the environmental factors associated with prevalence of overweight and obesity, and to establish the character of the correlations occurring.Environmental factors associated with prevalence of obesity among children are: improper eating habits of parents, consumption of meals separately from the family, type of foods available, skipping meals, level of consumption of fast foods, sweets and sweetened soft drinks, fruit and vegetables, whole-grain products, physical activity level and time spent on watching television, sleep duration and finally the infrastructure of local area and intervention programmes.
